DMPS Superintendent Ian Roberts was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Friday, September 26, according to federal officials. The arrest is reportedly related to allegations that Roberts entered the United States without proper authorization.
According to DHS, a final order of removal was issued in May 2024 for Roberts’ deportation. ICE agents allegedly found a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash, and a hunting knife in Roberts’ vehicle during the arrest.
Despite reports of the gun, DMPS said its policy prohibits weapons on school grounds or at school-related activities. The district also stated that a comprehensive background check was conducted on Roberts before his hiring.
Roberts is reportedly from Guyana and has been the superintendent since July 2023. He previously competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games for Guyana as a mid-distance runner.
Governor Kim Reynolds, state officials, and community leaders have issued statements regarding the arrest, with some calling for deportation and others expressing concern about the district’s handling of the situation. An interim superintendent has been appointed until further notice.
The incident highlights concerns about immigration enforcement and its impact on schools and communities.
