Oregon Sues Trump Over Troop Deployment in Portland

Oregon officials filed a lawsuit against President Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after the Trump administration deployed 200 National Guard members to Portland for 60 days. The state claims that the deployment is an “overreach” and will escalate tensions, while the city’s law enforcement resources are already stretched thin.

The lawsuit argues that the deployment violates Oregon’s sovereignty under the 10th Amendment, which states that police power resides with the states. It also claims that targeting a particular jurisdiction for political retribution undermines state sovereignty and treats it unfairly.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has stated that there is no insurrection or threat to national security, and that the federal troops are not needed in Portland. She described the deployment as an “abuse of power” that would stoke fear and create conflict.

The White House claims that President Trump’s order is necessary to protect federal assets and personnel from violent riots. However, the state of Oregon disputes this claim, arguing that the situation is already under control and that further escalation is not needed.
