Moldova’s pro-European ruling party has won a resounding victory in the country’s key parliamentary election, with President Maia Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) securing 50.2% of the votes. The outcome is seen as a blow to Russia’s influence in Moldova, which had sought to sway the vote through disinformation and pressure.
The European Union and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy have hailed the election result as a democratic victory for Moldova, while Russia has denied any involvement in the voting process. The Kremlin accused Moldovan authorities of preventing hundreds of thousands of its citizens from voting by limiting the number of polling stations for the diaspora.
The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) observer mission noted that while the election was competitive, it had flaws, including the exclusion of two parties from the ballot just days before the vote. Despite this, the OSCE praised the “high level of commitment to democracy” shown by Moldovan voters.
The pro-European PAS party has long been a vocal advocate for closer ties with the EU and has sought to distance Moldova from Russia’s orbit. The election result is seen as a major boost for Moldova’s bid to join the European Union, which had faced significant resistance from Russia.
