Michigan Church Shooting Survivor Describes Terrifying Escape

Paul Kirby, who survived a church shooting in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, on Sunday, described his terrifying escape from gunfire. He was attending a service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with his family when a gunman drove into the church and began firing.

Kirby said he initially thought nothing was wrong but turned to investigate and saw the gunman with a gun. He quickly ran back inside to find his family, recalling feeling shrapnel hit his leg. The shooter fired multiple rounds from an assault rifle, destroying much of the building.

At least four people were killed in the shooting, and eight others suffered hospitalizations. The FBI is investigating the incident as “an act of targeted violence” and has identified the gunman as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a former U.S. Marine Corps member who was deployed overseas during the Iraq war.
