“House of Dynamite”: Filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow Explores Nuclear War Nightmare

In her new film “A House of Dynamite,” director Kathryn Bigelow tackles a nightmare scenario that has haunted humanity since the dawn of nuclear age. The movie follows a single missile launched from an unknown location in the Pacific, with a trajectory estimated to hit the continental United States.

With only 19 minutes left before impact, President Idris Elba must make impossible decisions as a crisis unfolds. Bigelow, known for her realistic portrayals of war and politics, drew from real-world experts and advisors to create an authentic environment.

Military consultant Lt. Gen. Dan Karbler worked closely with Bigelow, who had refused Pentagon cooperation for the film. Despite this, Karbler’s expertise was invaluable in creating a super-realistic depiction of missile defense systems.

The movie highlights the absurdity of a single human decision determining the fate of humanity. “We live in a house full of dynamite,” says screenwriter Noah Oppenheim. Bigelow adds that filmmakers must find ways to “take the dynamite out of the walls” without dismantling the foundation.

“A House of Dynamite” is now playing in theaters and streaming on Netflix, October 24.
