Afghanistan says it killed 58 Pakistani soldiers in overnight border operations, responding to what it called repeated violations of its territory and airspace. The Taliban government’s chief spokesman said Afghan forces captured 25 Pakistani army posts, 58 soldiers were killed, and 30 others wounded. This comes after Pakistan did not claim responsibility for bombing the capital Kabul and a market in eastern Afghanistan.
The situation is tense between the two countries, with skirmishes along the border and heavy clashes on Saturday night. The Torkham border crossing was closed, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the assault, saying his country’s army gave a “befitting reply” to Afghanistan’s provocations.
However, tensions are high due to a mutual defense pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, which may have put Qatar under Islamabad’s nuclear umbrella. The two countries share a 2,611-kilometer border, but Afghanistan has never recognized it. The situation remains volatile, with both sides taking steps to secure their borders.
