OpenAI plans to introduce mature conversations, including erotica, to its popular chatbot ChatGPT once it launches age verification in December. According to CEO Sam Altman, the company will allow verified adults to engage in more explicit topics.
The decision comes after OpenAI hinted at allowing developers to create “mature” apps for ChatGPT earlier this month. This move is not unique to OpenAI, as Elon Musk’s xAI previously launched flirty AI companions in the Grok app.

The company realized that its previous restrictions made the chatbot less enjoyable for users with no mental health issues. To mitigate this, OpenAI has launched tools to detect when a user is experiencing distress and formed a council on “well-being and AI” to guide its response to sensitive scenarios.
The new features aim to strike a balance between user safety and the ability to engage in mature conversations. As CEO Sam Altman notes, the company’s goal is to treat adult users like adults and provide them with more options for discussion topics.
