Hegseth made the comments in response to reports that Texas National Guard troops had been replaced in Illinois due to failing to meet physical fitness standards. However, his remarks sparked ridicule from Donald Trump and others, who mocked Hegseth’s own physique.
The incident comes as Hegseth has faced criticism for his own health issues, including undergoing botox injections last month. The “Pete and Bobby challenge” at the Pentagon, where Hegseth attempted to complete 50 pull-ups and 100 pushups alongside health secretary Robert Kennedy Jr, was widely criticized for lacking proper form.
Hegseth had earlier boasted that ‘standards are back’ at the Department of War, but his own fitness standards were questioned after footage surfaced of him attempting a pull-up. The incident highlights the hypocrisy between Hegseth’s comments and his own physical abilities.
