A police officer in suburban Chicago, Radule Bojovic, has been arrested by ICE as part of a federal crackdown on undocumented immigrants. Bojovic, who is originally from Montenegro, entered the US on a tourist visa that expired 10 years ago and worked as a sworn officer with the Hanover Park Police Department despite being undocumented.
The arrest was made during Operation Midway Blitz, a DHS enforcement campaign targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records in the Chicago area. Records show Bojovic’s total earnings this year cost taxpayers $205,707, including FICA/Medicare taxes.
Illinois is a sanctuary state, limiting cooperation between local police and federal immigration authorities. The Trump administration has been critical of these policies, with President Donald Trump and Governor JB Pritzker accusing the state of acting illegally.
The arrest highlights the ongoing debate over immigration policies in the US, with DHS officials saying that undocumented immigrants with criminal records have no place on police forces.
