Windows 11 Update Adds Black Borders to File Explorer Selections

Microsoft recently released an update that adds black borders around selected folders and files in File Explorer for users with Windows 11. This change, which started rolling out with KB5040442, was met with mixed reactions from users. Some saw it as a bug, while others thought it improved accessibility. Microsoft officials describe the change as a feature to make selections easier to see.

The new black borders are only visible in light mode and do not align with Windows 11’s design standards. Users were expecting a blue accent color similar to previous versions, but Microsoft decided on black to increase contrast. The black borders have been criticized for not looking good in File Explorer, and users are not happy about it.

It is possible that Microsoft may add an option to toggle selection contrast in Accessibility settings in a future update. This would allow users to choose how they want their selections displayed.

In other news, Microsoft is testing full-featured Android integration through the Phone Link app. This allows users to browse and manage files between their Windows 11 device and Android phone. The app also includes a button to delete phone files stored on the desktop computer or automatically purge them after five days. This feature is currently exclusive to testers in the Windows Insider Program.
