“Bampire” A Bloodthirsty Mashup of Bambi

“Bampire,” a horror-comedy film set in the Pacific Northwest, combines elements of “Bambi” with vampire lore. The indie-made movie follows a group of community college students as they search for evidence of a rare deer species in the Cascades. Instead, they discover a half-deer, half-human monster that wreaks havoc on their lives.

Screenwriter ZoĆ« Wassman was inspired by a late-night car accident where she narrowly avoided a deer with glowing eyes. The incident sparked her interest in writing about vampires as predators rather than romanticized creatures. Working with director Taylor Morden, who previously made the documentary “The Last Blockbuster,” Wassman created a unique blend of horror and comedy.

To stay within budget, the filmmakers employed creative adaptations, such as using 2D animation to represent wildlife scenes. They also used local landmarks like Lane Community College and Spencer Butte for exterior shots.

“Bampire” pays homage to public domain characters by incorporating elements from “Bambi.” The film’s marketing campaign leans into its campy side, highlighting the zany tone and cartoon-like visuals. With a budget of less than $100,000, the movie aims to carve out a niche in the crowded indie horror market.

Wassman and Morden are seeking distribution for their film, with hopes of securing a formal release by the end of 2025. Fans can catch “Bampire” at the Art House starting October 18, with tickets available online for $11 per adult ticket and $10 for students.
