Doug Martin, a former running back for the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died while in police custody early Saturday morning. He was 36 years old. Martin’s cause of death is currently unconfirmed, and an investigation by multiple local law enforcement agencies is ongoing.
Martin spent seven seasons in the NFL, playing for both teams from 2012 to 2018. His family has asked for privacy at this time. The incident began when Oakland police responded to reports of a home break-in on Ettrick Street, where they encountered Martin, who was experiencing a medical emergency. A brief struggle ensued before he became unresponsive, and paramedics were called to the scene.
Martin starred in college at Boise State, leaving as the third-leading rusher in program history, with over 3,400 yards and 43 touchdowns. He had notable seasons with the Buccaneers and Raiders, including a Pro Bowl appearance in his rookie season.
