Texas Ed Comm Commissioner Weighs Fate of Failing School District

Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath visited a 3,200-student district in Fort Worth to review the school’s performance. The district had received failing grades for five consecutive years, and Morath is considering appointing a state board of managers or closing one of its schools.

Morath said he sees both positive and negative signs during his visit. He observed evidence of good practice, such as regular coaching for teachers and consistent leadership routines. However, he also noted significant challenges, including a lack of urgency among the district’s leaders to address problems four years ago.

The commissioner emphasized the importance of supporting teachers with resources they need to do their jobs well. He questioned why board members did not act sooner to address the district’s issues.

Morath has not yet made a decision but must take action by December, as required by state law. State Board of Education member Brandon Hall expressed support for Morath’s approach, saying “we need to do what’s best for the students.”
