Myanmar’s military raided a major online scam operation near the border with Thailand, detaining over 2,000 people and seizing Starlink satellite internet terminals. The raid was part of operations aimed at suppressing online fraud, illegal gambling, and cross-border cybercrime.
The army targeted KK Park, a notorious cybercrime centre, which has been linked to recruiting workers from other countries under false pretences and forcing them into criminal activities. The raid also uncovered 260 unregistered buildings and seized equipment, including 30 Starlink terminals.
Scam operations in Myanmar are infamous for targeting people worldwide with fake investment pitches and romantic scams. The international community has taken action against similar operations, with the US and Britain imposing sanctions on alleged scammers last week.
KK Park is located near the border with Thailand and falls under the influence of ethnic minority militias. The military government accused leaders of the Karen National Union of involvement in the scam projects, but they deny any link.
Starlink terminals were seized during the raid, despite not having licensed operations in Myanmar. The company has a policy against fraudulent activities and has been involved in previous crackdowns on cyberscam operations in the country.
