Greenwood, Miss., Elects State Senator on Nov. 4

Residents in Greenwood and surrounding areas are gearing up to elect a new state senator for District 24, a seat that includes parts of Leflore County, Tallahatchie, and Panola counties. Six candidates are vying for the position, including seasoned politicians like Curressia McFarland Brown, Jason Colquett, and Justin Pope.

Margaret Hurt, a veteran crossing guard who has dedicated her life to helping others, is prioritizing crime prevention, community development, and social welfare in her choice of candidate. She joins Shirley Ivory, an 80-year-old resident whose medical costs have skyrocketed after gallbladder surgery, in calling for cleaner communities, affordable healthcare, and stronger schools.

Candidates Loretta Johnson McClee, Georgio Proctor, and Everette Hill are focusing on community development, job creation, and improving healthcare services. Meanwhile, Curressia McFarland Brown aims to “continue the fight” against challenges facing District 24, while Jason Colquett seeks to improve education, restore healthcare services, and bring job training.

The special election is set for Nov. 4, with a runoff election scheduled for Dec. 2 if no candidate earns a majority of the vote. Voters can cast ballots from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and must bring accepted voter ID to the polls.
