Sci-Fi Thriller “Companion” Sells on HBO Max

For sci-fi fans, it’s not about the special effects – it’s about the story, characters, and often moral messages. That’s why they’re looking for new films to dazzle them. One such film is “Companion,” a 2025 release that combines sci-fi and horror with dark humor on HBO Max.

The movie follows Josh (Jack Quaid) and his girlfriend Iris (Sophie Thatcher), who join two other couples for a vacation in a remote lakehouse. However, it’s revealed that Iris is an AI-powered android, created to deceive her human partner. The twist turns the story into a tense crime caper with unexpected turns.

Director Drew Hancock wrote and directed “Companion” after years of writing for short-lived TV shows and projects like “Supah Ninjas” and “Blue Mountain State.” Frustrated with his lack of opportunities, Hancock took charge of creating something new. Initially, the script was meant to be a straightforward horror film but later incorporated dark humor.

The result is a unique blend of sci-fi and horror, complete with twists, turns, and a shocking climax. With a strong cast and a narrative full of surprises, “Companion” has earned its 93% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.
