Ford Sticks to Gun on Anti-Trump Ad Amid Tariff Tensions

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has no regrets about running an ad critical of US President Donald Trump’s trade policies, which has drawn a stern response from the White House.

Ford, who wants to be seen as Canada’s most outspoken opponent of Trump’s trade war, says he achieved his goal and is glad Ronald Reagan was a free trader. The “Canada Is Not For Sale” ad, which used excerpts from a 1987 radio address by Reagan, was shown to US Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before airing in the US.

The ad has damaged relations between Trudeau and Trump, who has announced plans to raise tariffs on Canada by an additional 10 percent over the weekend. The White House has yet to release details on how it will implement this new tariff.

Ford’s government had initially delayed pulling the ad after Trump called it a “hostile act,” but decided to air it anyway, and is now sharing it with Democratic state leaders in Minnesota, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
