A combination of Covid-19, flu, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), and norovirus could lead to a “quad-demic” of viral illnesses this winter, doctors warn. The US is seeing an increase in cases of these four viruses, which are spread through the air when someone coughs or sneezes, or via contact with contaminated surfaces.
Low vaccination rates, particularly for flu, and increased mixing during the holiday season have contributed to the predicted surge in infections. According to Dr. Joe Breese, an infectious disease expert, people need to get vaccinated against the flu and Covid-19 to boost their immune systems. Adults over 75 years old should also consider getting the RSV vaccine, which is up to 98% effective in preventing severe illness.
Dr. Bill Schaffner emphasizes that these viruses can cause serious symptoms, including fever, cough, shortness of breath, and stomach cramps. The flu, Covid-19, and RSV are responsible for an estimated 12,000 to 52,000 deaths each year in the US, while norovirus contributes around 900 deaths.
Health experts advise people to take precautions such as wearing face masks, especially those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions. Hospital systems in California and New York City have reinstated mask mandates due to the rising number of cases. As the winter season progresses, it’s essential for Americans to be aware of these potential risks and take necessary steps to protect themselves and their loved ones.
The predicted “quad-demic” could bring significant pressure on the healthcare system if not addressed promptly. With vaccination rates lagging behind previous years, especially for flu, experts urge people to prioritize getting vaccinated before it’s too late.
