Proton Launches Data Breach Observatory to Expose Corporate Secrecy

Proton has launched a new service called the Data Breach Observatory, which aims to expose corporate information security cover-ups by revealing breaches that don’t reach regulators’ portals or are kept secret by organizations. The platform scours the dark web for details of unreported breaches, including 300 million individual records across 794 attacks.

Proton claims there is a lack of transparency around data breaches and a growing market on the dark web for stolen personal information. The company says it wants to help small and medium-sized businesses become more aware of the dangers and improve their security systems.

The Data Breach Observatory will feature only attacks that targeted individual organizations, not aggregated cases. Proton has partnered with Constella Intelligence to ensure the accuracy of the data it finds by cross-referencing against known breach patterns, analyzing metadata, and contacting affected companies for confirmation.

This new service is different from existing platforms like HaveIBeenPwned, which relies on self-reported breaches. Proton’s Observatory fills a gap by monitoring criminal sources directly and providing near-real-time updates on unreported breaches.
