The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll shows that most Americans blame President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress more for the government shutdown than Democrats. The survey found that 37% of registered voters blame Democrats, while 46% blame Republicans.
Concern about the shutdown has grown as it has continued, with 43% saying they are “very concerned” today, up from 25% when the shutdown began.
Blame for the impasse largely falls along partisan lines, with independents holding Trump and Republicans responsible by a 2-1 margin. The survey also found that Democrats blame Trump and Republicans more than other groups, with 8 in 10 saying they are mainly to blame.
The government shutdown has had significant impacts on Americans, including thousands of federal workers furloughed and tens of thousands more working unpaid. Funding for programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is also set to expire, threatening food aid for millions of people.
The survey’s findings highlight the growing divide in opinion between Democrats, Republicans, and independents on the shutdown. With many agencies still closed due to the shutdown, the full cost of the crisis remains unclear.
