Donna Hughes-Brown, an Irish woman living in the US since childhood, has had her deportation hearing delayed again. Her husband, Jim Brown, described the judicial procedures as “nefarious” and hopes to gather support from 20 US senators before his wife’s Christmas deportation hearing.
Donna, 58, is a green card holder with three American-born children and five grandchildren. However, she faces deportation due to two cheque misdemeanours from over a decade ago, which total less than $65. Her husband believes this is unfair, as the infractions were for food and not a serious crime.
The family had hoped to watch Donna’s hearing on video link, but was informed of the latest deferral after learning it would take place on Wednesday. This is the second time her case has been deferred since she was arrested at O’Hare airport in Chicago.
Donna’s detention centre living conditions have also raised concerns, with Jim describing them as “filthy” and “inefficient.” The family’s legal team plans to file a habeas corpus petition to challenge Donna’s detention.
