Meta is launching a new tool called AI Studio, allowing anyone in the US to create AI versions of themselves on Instagram or online. Creators and business owners will use these AI profiles to talk to their followers on their behalf. The AI can respond to comments and engage in chat threads with humans. To customize their AI, creators can specify topics to avoid, links to share, and auto-replies. They can also limit which accounts the AI interacts with.
AI Studio also enables the creation of new AI characters that can be used across Meta’s apps. This is similar to what startups like Character.AI and Replika offer. The AI characters will be surfaced for others to try, just like OpenAI’s custom GPT Store.
Initially, Meta had celebrities create AI versions of themselves with different names and personas. However, this approach was limited due to concerns about the AI saying problematic things on behalf of its human counterpart. To address these concerns, Meta is emphasizing that AI profiles are clearly labeled everywhere they appear. Creators must also specify topics their AI won’t engage in, such as financial advice like “Should I invest in crypto??”
