Fort Worth mayors Mattie Parker and Stephanie Boardingham will distribute 100 food boxes to families in southeast Fort Worth on Tuesday morning, as part of the THRIVE Drive event at O.D. Wyatt High School. The boxes contain four meals and a case of water and were made possible by local donations from the Tarrant County Mayors’ Council and Fort Worth Mayor Parker’s office. The initiative aims to support families affected by the government shutdown, which left about 100,000 people in Tarrant County without vital assistance.
The THRIVE Market program, which offers food through points earned in school, will also be open during the event. Boardingham hopes that this collaboration can inspire other local leaders to work together on initiatives serving their constituents. The federal government has announced that it will partially fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), but no new applicants will be considered for now.
The distribution of food boxes is a response to the recent shutdown, which caused disruptions in essential services like SNAP. Despite this, local schools are working to provide support to families through community and campus-based resources. This event aims to bridge the gap until further assistance arrives from the federal government.
