Former Fort Worth City Council member Gyna Bivens is facing a new health challenge as she battles pancreatic cancer, an aggressive form of the disease that runs in her family. Bivens recently received the diagnosis after learning little about it beforehand.
Bivens’ faith and support from her community are helping her cope with this battle, which comes six months after she stepped down from City Council. During her 12-year tenure, Bivens championed economic development in a historically Black neighborhood, advocated for tree canopy protection, and supported affordable housing for senior citizens.
Several of Bivens’ former colleagues, including Mayor Mattie Parker and Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare, have expressed well wishes and offered prayers for her health. Council members are rallying around Bivens, showing their support through social media messages.
