Hmong-American Woman Wins Historic St. Paul Mayoral Election

Kaohly Her, a 52-year-old state representative from Minnesota’s Hmong community, has won the St. Paul mayoral election in a historic victory. She will become the first woman and the first person from her community to hold the office.

Her defeated two-term Mayor Melvin Carter, who had represented the city for seven years. Although both candidates shared similar policy goals, Her focused on criticizing Carter’s management style during the campaign.

After midnight, when it became clear that Her had won, she addressed her supporters with a message of commitment and community involvement. She promised to “always show up” for the city, despite its size. Carter conceded the election, saying it was never about him, but about serving the city and its people.
