Qatar Airways will sell its entire 9.6% stake in Cathay Pacific Airways to buy back at $1.4 per share. The airline sold its holding for $896 million, ending eight years of investment in Hong Kong’s flagship carrier. Qatar acquired the stake in 2017 for $662 million and has since invested heavily in the airline.
Cathay’s two largest shareholders, Swire Pacific and Air China, will now hold 47.7% and 37.8%, respectively. The airline plans to use the sale to fund its growth strategy, which includes a $12.9 billion investment in fleet and lounges over seven years.
Despite selling its stake, Qatar Airways and Cathay will continue to collaborate through existing codeshare and alliance agreements. This marks another move by Qatar Airways to diversify its investments globally, following recent acquisitions in China Southern Airlines and Virgin Australia.
