Appeals Court Won’t Block Trump Admin’s SNAP Funding Payment

A federal appeals court has ruled that the Trump administration must pay full food stamp benefits for November, but the decision is on hold due to a prior Supreme Court order. The 1st Circuit Court of Appeals declined to block an order from a district court judge requiring the Agriculture Department to send states full SNAP funding for November. However, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson has issued a temporary order allowing officials to delay payment until Tuesday night.

The decision comes after federal officials failed to ensure that partial funding they were previously ordered to provide actually reached recipients. The appeals panel’s 29-page opinion emphasizes the “immense” harm that would befall nearly 42 million Americans who rely on SNAP, including fourteen million children, if full funding is not provided on time. Despite the ruling, the Supreme Court has intervened, putting the decision on hold for now.
