A federal magistrate judge, Laura McNally, is planning a visit to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Broadview, Illinois. The visit comes after Judge Robert Gettleman issued a temporary restraining order to improve conditions at the facility. McNally has been tasked with supervising the exchange of evidence as part of the discovery process.
The facility has become notorious for holding people for days without adequate food, water, and sleep. Gettleman’s order requires cells to be cleaned twice daily and provides detainees with clean bedding and mattresses. However, some issues are still being worked out, including delivery times for essential items.
McNally has moved forward with the visit despite concerns from the Justice Department that it may not be feasible due to a lack of preparedness. The judge plans to assess the facility’s compliance with Gettleman’s order and ensure that detainees have access to basic necessities.
The situation highlights ongoing concerns about conditions at immigration facilities, particularly during Operation Midway Blitz, which began in September. Detainees have reported being held for extended periods without adequate care or attention.
