Marjorie Taylor Greene, a high-profile Republican and ally of Donald Trump, has announced her resignation from Congress. The Georgia congresswoman’s decision comes after a bitter public feud with the US president over his handling of Jeffrey Epstein documents.
Greene had been a vocal advocate for releasing the files related to the late paedophile, an issue that once united Trump and his base but has since become divisive. However, after Trump labelled her a “traitor”, Greene said she refused to be a “battered wife” hoping things would get better.
The feud between Greene and Trump escalated with the president calling her a “traitor” and vowing to support a Republican challenger to unseat her. Despite this, Trump later reversed course and signed a bill forcing the US Justice Department to release the documents within 30 days.
Greene’s decision to leave Congress marks an unexpected turn for the high-profile Republican, who had been a key supporter of Trump’s agenda. The congresswoman has since expressed interest in running for state office, including as Georgia governor or Senate seat.
