Locals in Kingston upon Thames were shocked by two massive murals that appeared to be created by AI during the holiday season. The artwork featured disturbing images of people, animals, and even a deformed snowman, reminiscent of old AI struggles with generating pictures of hands with five fingers.
Some thought the murals were meant to celebrate Cthulhu’s return, while others questioned why such “carnage” was allowed. However, the building owners didn’t take them down because they were lazy or disturbing – it was the artwork’s potential political message that sparked controversy.
One mural depicted a group of people splashing through water, possibly referencing migrants crossing the English Channel. The owners claimed it was meant to be inspired by 16th-century Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder, but critics argued it could be seen as mocking migrants or trying to humanize them who risk their lives crossing the channel.
The incident highlights how sensitive people have become to politics like immigration in the UK. They’re willing to overlook disturbing artwork if it touches on sensitive subjects, and xenophobia and racism continue to rise.
