Mayor Adams’ Administration to Lay Off Hundreds Under Zohran Mamdani

A new mayor is taking over in New York City, but many of his staff won’t be with him. Over 170 employees from Mayor Eric Adams’ administration will no longer work for the city after being notified by incoming Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s team. This move comes as part of a typical mayoral transition where new leaders shake up the old staff.

The layoffs are expected to affect most of the 1,200 employees working in the mayor’s office and around City Hall. Some employees expressed disagreement with Adams’ policies and values. The outgoing mayor’s office called the layoffs “a massive loss for New Yorkers,” while the incoming administration promised to bring change and improve city government.

A new study shows that over 70,000 people applied to work under Mayor Mamdani’s team. The transition process is lengthy, often requiring civil-service exams or months of waiting. This isn’t unusual for mayors looking to revamp their staff, but it still affects those who have dedicated years to the city government.
