Gerrie Whitaker, president and CEO of North Texas Area Community Health Centers (NTACHC), has been working to change the perception of the nonprofit since 2017. Initially, NTACHC was seen as a “poor people’s clinic,” but under Whitaker’s leadership, it has expanded its services and improved patient outcomes.
Since its founding 20 years ago, NTACHC has grown significantly, with over 13,200 patients in 2023 compared to 4,412 in 2006. The nonprofit has introduced new programs, including Living Your Best Life, a comprehensive approach to managing blood pressure and diabetes. This program has received accreditation from the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists.
NTACHC has also rolled out remote patient monitoring through wireless blood pressure monitors, allowing medical staff to respond quickly to treatment changes. The program is free for patients, funded by private foundations and donors.
The nonprofit’s success has caught the attention of the National Hypertension Control Program, which is using NTACHC’s model as an example for implementing remote patient monitoring. NTACHC also offers Joyful Beginnings, a program providing pregnancy and postpartum education for expectant and new mothers.
Whitaker emphasizes that access to care is not just about building facilities but about creating a trusted environment where patients feel supported throughout their treatment journey. With plans to add two new facilities in the next four years, NTACHC is committed to spreading its mission of patient-centered care.
