After the UK’s online safety act came into effect this summer, Brits quickly found ways to bypass its age restrictions. Some used video games like Death Stranding to spoof IP addresses, but a more effective solution emerged: Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The BBC reported that several free VPN apps made it onto the top 10 list of iOS apps soon after the law took effect, and VPN usage increased significantly. The UK government is now facing calls to restrict children’s access to VPNs, as its child safety law has been deemed ineffective by many.
