Astronomers Detect Possible Dark Matter for First Time

Dark matter, a mysterious substance making up over 85% of the universe’s mass, may have been detected for the first time by astronomers. The claim is based on new study published in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics.

According to researchers, they found a halo of gamma rays extending toward the center of the Milky Way galaxy using NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. This discovery matches the shape expected from dark matter halos and suggests that WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles) may exist.

The detection is significant as it could be a crucial breakthrough in understanding dark matter’s nature. However, some physicists are skeptical and need more evidence to confirm the finding. The researchers plan to substantiate their claim by detecting similar gamma-ray signatures in small dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way.
