Tech Firms Explore Space for AI Power

Major tech firms are discussing data hubs in space due to rapidly growing demand for AI power. Google plans to launch two small units in orbit by 2027, using Tensor chips to link with Planet Labs. Elon Musk and Marc Benioff have expressed interest in launching large solar units or rings into space to keep up with AI demands.

The push for space data hubs comes from the rapid growth of AI’s power use, expected to reach 945 terawatt-hours by 2030. However, launch costs still remain high, and firms need to reduce costs to $200 per kilogram by 2035. The challenges include heavy space heat, limited room for upgrades, and high orbit risk.

While space data hubs are a long-term plan, investors may see early tests in the next few years. As tech demand continues to grow, firms will explore new ideas to meet the increasing power needs of AI systems.
