Texas Wesleyan University has launched a new $1.79 million initiative to support teacher training and retention in North Texas classrooms. The university’s Center for Educator Excellence will focus on research, professional development, and scholarship programs to keep educators in the area.
The attraction of talented teachers is crucial for students’ success and the local economy. However, teacher attrition has increased significantly since the pandemic, with rates reaching 13.5% last school year. To address this issue, lawmakers have provided funding for teacher training and retention initiatives.
Texas Wesleyan’s Center for Educator Excellence aims to recruit, educate, and support educators across DFW, while also investing in local neighborhood schools and districts. The university believes that this new initiative will help strengthen communities through the preparation of teachers.
The university received grants from the Moody Foundation and Paul E. Andrews Jr. Foundation to establish the center. With this funding, Texas Wesleyan plans to provide research support on topics such as teacher stress and professional development, as well as retention-based scholarships for educators.
