Lane Kiffin has left his one-loss University of Mississippi team to become the head coach at Louisiana State University (LSU). Kiffin, who was in his sixth season with the Rebels, said he would have stayed if allowed to coach the team through the playoffs. However, athletic director Keith Carter denied this request, forcing Kiffin’s departure.
Kiffin, known for his success and innovative approach to coaching, is being hailed as a top choice by LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry. The school offered Kiffin a seven-year contract with an average annual salary of around $13 million. Kiffin has overseen one of the most successful stints in UM history, but he will now aim to win multiple national championships at LSU.
This move comes as a surprise, especially given that LSU’s previous coach, Brian Kelly, was fired just a few months ago and the school is already facing an early hiring cycle. Kiffin’s departure marks a significant change for the Rebels, who are 11-1 and all but certain to make the playoff.
