A powerful tropical cyclone has struck the French Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte, killing at least 11 people and injuring over 250 others. The storm’s equivalent wind speed was at least a Category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic, according to the US military’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
French officials estimate that hundreds more may have lost their lives due to the cyclone’s powerful winds and heavy rains. The worst storm in 90 years brought 140 mph winds to Mayotte’s island of Petite-Terre, causing widespread destruction.
Mayotte, the poorest territory in the European Union, is facing a devastating crisis. French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged support for the affected population, while European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has offered solidarity and assistance from the EU.
The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but officials warn that phone and internet networks remain disrupted, making it difficult to receive aid and communicate with loved ones. French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau plans to visit Mayotte on Monday to assess the situation firsthand.
