Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts has been sentenced to six months in absentia, a one-year driving ban, and a fine of €4,000 for repeatedly driving without a valid licence. In April 2024, he was caught riding a motorbike twice without a valid licence, despite being banned from driving since 2021. The court found three offences proven and imposed the sentence.
Schoenaerts has been convicted 12 times before, with the court considering it an aggravating circumstance that previous measures had failed. He must now pass remedial exams, medical assessments, and psychological evaluations before being allowed to drive again.
The actor’s latest conviction may not be his last, as he was recently stopped by police in November 2025 for driving without a licence. He has been one of Belgium’s most internationally recognized actors since his breakthrough in the 2011 Oscar-nominated film “Bullhead”.
