A long-stalled project to build thousands of new apartments near Barclays Center in central Brooklyn may finally get a boost. The 22-acre Atlantic Yards project, which was first proposed in 2003, has only built around half of the promised 6,400 apartments.
The new development team, led by LCOR and Cirrus Real Estate Partners, wants to build even more apartments than originally planned, with a total of 9,000 units. The buildings will be taller than initially anticipated, allowing for more public open space. The project’s original plan included over 2,250 affordable apartments, but only about half have been completed.
The new team has development rights for several blocks in Prospect Heights and is proposing changes to the project’s design, including two residential towers on a parcel of land near Flatbush Avenue. Some residents are skeptical about the proposed changes, citing concerns about affordability and apartment sizes.
