Mayor Eric Adams’ Investigation Opened Amid Corruption Probe

New York City’s Department of Investigation (DOI) is conducting an ongoing investigation into whether Mayor Eric Adams violated ethics laws, despite a previous corruption case being dismissed due to a deal with the Trump Justice Department. In a court order issued on Wednesday, DOI Commissioner Jocelyn Strauber confirmed the probe, which aims to examine potential conflicts of interest involving Adams’ fundraising tactics and his dealings with Turkish officials. The investigation is separate from the federal indictment that was previously dropped, but both cases raise questions about Adams’ actions as mayor and his compliance with campaign finance laws.

DOI’s probe focuses on whether Adams pressured FDNY officials to approve a fire suppression system in Turkey’s consulate building without considering fire safety inspectors’ concerns. This case allegedly involved Adams receiving airline upgrades and illegal straw donations arranged by Turkish officials, with prosecutors claiming it was “turn” for Adams to return the favor. The investigation is ongoing, but the city Campaign Finance Board has already found Adams’ campaign noncompliant with rules due to his failure to disclose donor sources and potential in-kind payments.

The probe’s existence raises new concerns about Adams’ ethics as mayor and his involvement in potential conflicts of interest. With the investigation still open, it remains unclear what specific allegations or evidence will be uncovered, but it is clear that Adams’ actions have raised eyebrows among officials and investigators alike.
