Climate Change Threatens Hazardous Sites Across Chesapeake Bay Region
A growing number of hazardous industrial facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region are at risk of flooding due to rising sea levels, putting nearby residents and communities in danger. According to a new study, over 5,500 sites nationwide face similar threats. In the Chesapeake Bay region alone, hundreds of sites are expected to be affected by 2100, including facilities like the Domino Sugar Refinery in Baltimore and the Washington Navy Yard in DC.
The study found that flood-imperiled communities have higher poverty rates, lower home ownership rates, and fewer vehicle owners compared to non-flooded areas. Climate change is exacerbating this issue, with coastal neighborhoods disproportionately affected by toxic floodwaters. Experts warn of short-term health effects like rashes and respiratory issues, as well as long-term consequences such as certain cancers.
The study’s authors recommend using a mapping tool to help policymakers and land planners identify and mitigate flood risks at hazardous sites. However, the actual flooding risk may be higher due to the impact of stronger hurricanes expected under climate change.
