OpenAI Ready to Counter Google’s Gemini 3 with GPT-5.2 Update

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declared a “code red” situation due to increased competition from Google and Anthropic. To counter this, the company is preparing its first response to Gemini 3 with an upcoming update to its GPT-5.2 model. According to sources, the 5.2 update aims to close the gap created by Google’s Gemini 3 release last month.

Altman previously stated that OpenAI’s next reasoning model, GPT-5.2, is “ahead of” Google’s Gemini 3 in internal evaluations. Originally planned for later in December, the release has been accelerated due to competitor pressure. OpenAI has now set a release date of December 9th, although it may still shift if development challenges arise.

In addition to GPT-5.2, OpenAI plans to focus on improving ChatGPT’s speed, reliability, and customizability in the coming months. With this update, OpenAI aims to maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
