AI Not Replacing Human Support for Teens’ Mental Health

The UK’s reliance on AI chatbots for mental health support is a growing concern. Rising NHS waiting lists and one in five young people living with a mental health condition have led many teenagers to turn to these tools, including ChatGPT. While AI offers benefits, it can’t replace the human element in mental care. Dr Roman Raczka of the British Psychological Society warns that overuse could lead to a public health emergency if the government doesn’t take action to expand the mental health workforce and ensure timely, in-person support for struggling teens.
