US lawmakers and industry insiders met today to discuss a key policy effort for the cryptocurrency market structure bill. The meeting was attended by Senator Tim Scott and other lawmakers, along with executives from major companies like Coinbase and Kraken.
The industry has another chance to clarify its positions before the Senate takes time off for the holidays. Kara Calvert, Coinbase’s vice president for US policy, said that while nothing new was resolved, the meeting showed bipartisan interest and momentum in finding common ground on the bill.
Industry leaders described the sense of optimism at the meeting, with Cody Carbone stating that Senate leaders are committed to finding compromise on the rules governing digital assets. However, significant issues such as decentralized finance (DeFi) treatment remain unresolved.
The talks have hung up on DeFi and Democrats’ proposal to ban senior officials from personal business ties to the industry, aimed at President Donald Trump. The end-of-year goal has slipped to January, with potential complications due to the budget deadline in December.
Industry leaders are hopeful that common ground can be found despite these challenges.
