Yann LeCun Launches New AI Startup, Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI)

Renowned AI scientist Yann LeCun has launched a new startup called Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI). The company is backed by significant investment and aims to raise €500 million at a valuation of €3 billion. AMI’s CEO will be Alex LeBrun, former co-founder and CEO of medical transcription AI startup Nabla.

LeCun confirmed the launch in a LinkedIn post, stating that he will serve as Executive Chairman while LeBrun takes on the role of CEO. This move comes after a successful stint at Meta, where LeCun was VP and Chief AI Scientist before winning the prestigious A.M. Turing Award.

AMI is working on world model AI, an alternative to large language models (LLMs) that aim to understand its environment to simulate cause-and-effect scenarios. World model creators believe this approach can address LLMs’ structural hallucination problems.

The startup’s ambitious fundraising goals may seem high, but LeCun is one of Nabla’s investors and has been backed by top venture capital firms. Alex LeBrun, former CEO of Nabla, brings experience in multimodal AI and has a strong track record of building successful startups.

AMI’s co-founder, Delphine Groll, will temporarily run the company until a new CEO is appointed. The startup plans to use AMI’s models as they are developed and has signed a partnership with Nabla.
