Google’s Project Genie Sends Video Game Stocks Tumbling

Google has launched a new experimental AI tool called Project Genie, a generative AI world model that allows users to create interactive virtual worlds. By providing text and image prompts, users can generate not just environments but also realistic characters that interact with the virtual space.

Project Genie was unveiled on Thursday and quickly affected video game stocks like Unity Software, Roblox, Take-Two, and AppLovin. The tool is currently only available to subscribers of Google’s AI Ultra plan for $249 per month.

Google DeepMind researchers shared examples of Project Genie in action, showcasing its potential impacts on the gaming industry. A staff prompt engineer, Riley Goodside, demonstrated how users can control what’s generated with an initial image and have more control over the environment once the character is moved around the virtual world.

However, some limitations are apparent, such as treating secondary characters as inanimate objects. Industry heads like Unity CEO Matthew Bromberg are concerned that world models might replace game engines, but they argue that these tools will enhance output from experienced developers.

While it’s early days for Project Genie, the tool can already generate detailed virtual worlds. The launch has sparked debate about copyright issues and the potential impact on the gaming industry.
