Android Users Urged to Upgrade as 40% Exposed to Malware Attacks

More than 40% of all Android phones are at risk from new malware and spyware attacks, Google has confirmed. The latest OS versions — Android 16, 15, 14, and 13 — have significant numbers on phones, but those using older versions (Android 12 or below) are not supported with critical security fixes.

The data is alarming, especially considering Apple’s iPhone users are also exposed to new attacks until they upgrade to iOS 26. However, Google’s advice suggests that Android users cannot update their phones with fixes if the operating system version is outdated. If your phone cannot update to Android 13 or newer, it’s recommended to buy a mid-range, supported phone rather than an older flagship.

Google emphasizes that devices as old as Android 7 are protected by Play Protect security features. However, this protection may not be enough against new spyware attacks. Manufacturers like Samsung have confirmed that their relatively new Galaxy S21 Series phones have fallen off support and will no longer receive security updates. This is a warning to users of these phones to consider upgrading to ensure their safety.

Google’s updated Android distribution chart shows the latest OS versions, but it highlights the importance of using supported operating systems with critical security fixes. Users are urged to take this seriously and upgrade their devices if necessary.
