GOP Rep Lawler Calls Trump’s Racist Post ‘Racist’

GOP Rep Mike Lawler criticized President Donald Trump for a racist animation posted by the president, which depicted former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle as apes. Lawler said he was one of the first Republicans to speak out against the post, calling it “racist” and saying that anyone responsible for creating the meme is an “idiot.” The White House initially blamed the post on a staffer but later deleted it.

Lawler also expressed frustration with Trump’s refusal to apologize for the video. He stated that he believes many Americans recognize the racist imagery and that comparing the first Black president to an ape is insensitive and hurtful. Lawler emphasized that everyone should acknowledge the mistake and move forward, rather than resorting to “fake outrage” or name-dropping.

Lawler also brought up other issues during his interview with ABC News, including reports of Trump’s request to rename Penn Station and Dulles International Airport after himself in exchange for unfrozen $16 billion in funding. Lawler stated that he is opposed to freezing funds but understands the complexities behind the issue. He emphasized that a critical infrastructure project is more important than its name.

On immigration reform, Lawler highlighted the need for a legal path forward for undocumented immigrants. He argued that people who have been in the country for years should be able to work legally and pay their taxes without fear of deportation. Lawler believes a solution is possible but requires a balanced approach.
