Linux 7.0 marks the end of the “Rust experiment”, with upstream developers now accepting Rust as a permanent part of the kernel. The decision comes after a long period of testing and adaptation, with millions of Android devices already using Rust. A recent patch by Miguel Ojeda confirms this, signaling a commitment to further development and support for the language.
The “experiment” is done, says Ojeda, who has contributed to the project’s growth over several years. He thanks kernel maintainers and developers from other projects for their support, which enabled the successful adoption of Rust in production environments. The patch adds annotations for improving Rust builds with kernel LTO usage and updates documentation.
While there are no groundbreaking changes, the decision brings stability and efficiency to the Linux kernel. As a result, companies can invest more time in training kernel developers to work with Rust, driving further innovation and growth.
